Just Take My Wallet

Three things today:

Thing 1: Although I don't normally watch movie trailers — they lie! — I made an exception for the upcoming Blue Beetle, which for legal reasons isn't titled Blue Spider-Man. I was thinking to myself, "This isn't for me," when the trailer gave me this:

© Warner Bros

The Bug! That is definitely for me. I still doubt we'll be seeing Booster Gold onscreen in that movie, but the trailer now makes me think we'll definitely be some Booster Gold Easter Eggs. We'll find out more in August.

Thing 2: This is only tangentially related to Booster Gold, but Mark Russell, writer of Booster Gold / The Flintstones Special team-up, has launched a Kickstarter to sell his own book of cartoons, Bunkbed Mishaps. One of the reward tiers includes a signed copy of The Flintstones: The Deluxe Edition collection with reprints the aforementioned team-up.

Full disclosure: I'm a big fan of all of Russell's writing (everything from God Is Disappointed in You to My Bad), so of course I'll be buying Bunkbed Mishaps. If you're interested in learning more about his latest project (or getting your hands on a signed Booster Gold comic), you'll find info at Kickstarter.com.

Thing 3: While we're on the subject of things I will be buying on Kickstarter, I might as well go ahead and throw my public support behind Karl Kesel's latest Impossible Jones comic book. Maybe you know Kesel as the creator of the Connor Kent incarnation of Superboy, but Booster boosters should always remember that he inked the fantastic story "When Titans Date" in Justice League Quarterly #10 (where Booster Gold and his fellow leaguers spy on Ted Kord's dinner date).

In addition to being a lot of fun to read, Kesel's Impossible Jones character raises similar ethical questions about what it means to steal your way to being a "hero" as a certain Michael "Booster" Carter. You can read more about her latest adventure, Impossible Jones and American A.N.G.E.L., on Kickstarter.com.

Okay, that's enough shilling for today. You may now resume your regularly scheduled ad-free Internet browsing.

Superhero Gig Economy

On Wednesday, DC gave a sneak peek of its December solicitations via DCComics.com. Blue and Gold was not mentioned, but there is another new title that sounds suspiciously like it.

And for fans looking to laugh, or just looking for a bargain, it's ONE-STAR SQUADRON.

From Harvey, Ringo and Eisner nominee Mark Russell (WONDER TWINS, EXIT STAGE LEFT: THE SNAGGLEPUSS CHRONICLES) and Eisner and Ringo winner Steve Lieber (SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN), comes a one-of-a-kind six-issue limited series that promises Superman-Level Service at Bizarro Prices!

ONE-STAR SQUADRON is DC's Super Hero team, where heroism meets capitalism. This ragtag group of heroes led by Red Tornado is here to provide service with a smile. All you have to do is send a request via their on-demand hero app and they'll answer any call. Whether it's a children's birthday party or an alien invasion, no job is too small or too big in this story about the Super Heroes without a billion dollar fortune or Fortress of Solitude to fall back on... heroes like Red Tornado, Power Girl, Gangbuster, and Minute Man. Follow these working stiffs as they work for a living while trying to parse one of the great mysteries of the world--just who's signing those checks and why?

Poor Power Girl and Red Tornado. They used to be Justice Leaguers. My, how the mighty have fallen.

Hey, wait a second! "One of a kind"? Former Leaguers Blue Beetle and Booster Gold announced their own on-demand super-hero service only last week in Blue and Gold #2!

It won't surprise any readers of this site that I've always loved the old, comedic Hero Hotline concept. I'm also a big, big fan of Mark Russell's sharply satirical point-of-view. So I expect great things from this new mini-series.

But in the long run, I'm hoping that Blue and Gold Restoration will be Coke to One-Star Squadron's Pepsi.

Ghost of Christmas Future

DC Nuclear Winter Special #1 will be coming to your Local Comic Shop later this week. It will be an anthology that includes a story about Rip Hunter being trapped in a post-apocalyptic future with a malfunctioning time sphere. The writer for that story is Mark Russell.

Russell — who ranks high among my favorite writers — was recently interviewed by Ernie Estrella for SyFy Wire in which he hinted that he'd like another shot at writing Booster Gold.

Russell has also written backup Superman stories, and has Harley Quinn #56 due out in December. He is inching closer to writing a DCU title regularly. His next project is to establish The Wonder Twins as a part of Brian Michael Bendis' Wonder Comics imprint in February of 2019. As for Rip Hunter, Russell had so much fun but had to leave much of it on the cutting room floor, similar to writing the Booster Gold / Flintstones crossover.

"What I would like to do someday is write a Booster Gold - Rip Hunter crossover that involves a time sphere, that expands on the two stories that I didn't get to tell in their totality," Russell openly pitched. If fans are lucky enough, Rip's future looks gold.

I could never be that lucky, so I hope that some other Booster booster is. I need more Booster Gold & Son stories in my life!

You can read more of the interview and see a preview of the DC Nuclear Winter Special at SyFy.com.

New Release: Batman 46

My shopping list for today's trip to my Local Comic Shop:

· Action Comics Special #1. Will we see any Booster Gold? Who cares. I'd buy it for either Dan Jurgens or Mark Russell alone. Maybe I should buy two copies.

· DC Nation #0. Who can pass up a DC comic for a quarter?

· Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles #5. No superheroes here, but Mark Russell again. 'Nuff said.

· Zero Hour: Crisis in Time reprint collection hardcover. Dan Jurgens introduction, updated timeline, new bonus material, and a guaranteed Booster Gold apperance? Yeah, I probably need to take a closer look at this.

Am I missing anything? Hmm. Anything? Oh, yeah. The follow-up to Batman #45.

As seen in the issue preview at DCComics.com, Batman #46 skips to "One Year Later" after the previous issue. What's Booster been doing in that time? Answer: growing a beard!

© DC Comics

Looking good! But looks aren't everything, and, sadly, Booster is, if anything, dumber in this issue. The preview has him doubling down on his determination to duplicate "For the Man Who Has Everything" for Batman by telling him that in an alternate timeline, he loved Catwoman. So kill your parents and get the girl! *Sigh*

I sure am looking forward to that Action Comics Special.

UPDATE 2018-05-02: No Booster in the Action Comics Special. Yes Booster in Injustice #25. Not an ideal trade, but I'll take it. They're both way better than the mess that is Batman #46.

New Release: Injustice 2 issue 21

Another week, another Booster Gold comic book appearance, this time in Injustice 2 #21.

© DC Comics

You may recall this digital-first issue was released on Comixology.com back in January as "Chapter Forty-One." If you didn't pick it up then, you probably want to do so today. Even though it takes place in the continuity of the Injustice video game, it's always entertaining to see the Blue and Gold team back together.

If you choose to buy a copy, it will make Skeets happy.

On a barely related note, also in stores today is Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles #3. It has nothing to do with Booster Gold except maybe the writer, Mark Russell. According to CBR.com, Russell told the crowd at last weekend's Emerald City Comic Con that the character he'd most like to explore more of in the "Rebirth" era is Booster Gold. Russell is already familiar with our hero; he wrote last summer's Booster Gold/Flintstone Special.

Snaggletooth is limited to six issues, so Russell will be free to explore other projects soon. And Dan Jurgens will need something to do after Bendis takes over Action Comics. How about some new Mark Russell written, Dan Jurgens drawn Booster Gold adventures, DC?
